From Proficiency Scale to reflections to goal setting, Unity Christian School’s High School Math Department has been experimenting with encouraging students to take ownership of their learning and look for continuous areas for growth. The 2023/2024 school year served as a pilot year, resulting in a clear vision and unified protocols for mathematics assessment and reflection from Grades 9 to 12. This session will outline some of the ideas and strategies attempted, the results of these attempts, as well as how things are currently going. Participants can expect to engage in conversation surrounding: ● Incorporating content AND competencies into daily class ● Creating authentic assessment without burning out ● Working accountability and reflection in throughout the entire semester ● Helpful ways to track student progress ● Practical strategies and tools to implement immediately The hope for this session is that math teachers can connect about the struggles we face across the board, but also feel supported and encouraged in collaborating to help students grow and become mathematical problem-solvers! While this project was implemented in Grades 9 to 12, content is also very applicable to Middle School grades.
